Our advising staff looks forward to answering your questions and helping you enroll. To be able to help, we need to you plan for our meeting and have a list of what would like take. Please follow these simple steps.
You need a PIN in order to enroll for fall and spring semesters. To receive your pin, please do the following:
- Keep an eye out for any emails from the advising office with information upcoming enrollment periods and your enrollment day and time.
- Put together a wish list in MaineStreet by logging in and using the wish list feature in your Student Center. Note: Advisors will not meet with you or provide a PIN if you don’t have a wish list.
- If you are unsure of what to take, review the information on the Undergraduate Program page, review general education requirements, or talk with a peer advisor.
- Peer advising schedules are posted in the department during enrollment.
- Please do not drop-in to the advising office without an appointment.
- Make an appointment with us or email us your wish list. Get your wish list approved early so you have a plan and your PIN number in hand when your enrollment day arrives.
- We guarantee responses to emailed wish lists within one week. Please do not email us the day before your enrollment and expect an immediate response.
- You can still have your wish list approved and receive your pin even if you have a hold on your account.
- Arrive to your appointment prepared with your wish list assembled and any questions you may have. Due to high demand and 20 minute appointment slots, we need a jumping off point. If you arrive unprepared, you will be asked to go finish your wish list and make another appointment.
Advising is located in Rm 442 in Dunn Hall. If the advisors are with another student, there are seats available in the hallway while you wait.
Please note, during enrollment periods email response times are longer and appointments fill up quickly. With this in mind, plan ahead with any advising needs and don’t wait until the last minute.

Q: Why won’t MaineStreet won’t let me enroll in a class even though it’s on my wish list?
A: There are several possible reasons why you are unable to enroll:
- The course is full. If this is the case, you should automatically be put on the wait list. MaineStreet automatically enrolls people from the wait list in order if space becomes available before the last add date.
- You do not meet the prerequisites for the course. You can put a class on your wish list even if you do not meet these requirements, but will not be able to enroll. Double check the course description to see if there are any listed. Common prerequisites are previous courses or specific year in school by credit number.
- You are already enrolled in too many credits. MaineStreet will only allow enrollment in up to 18 credits per semester.
- You are already enrolled in a class during the scheduled time. MaineStreet prevents you from enrolling in courses that have schedule conflicts.

Q: Why don’t you have appointments available when I need them?
A: Appointment times fill up quickly during the weeks of enrollment. Plan ahead and schedule your appointment early. Remember that you can come in before your scheduled enrollment time.
If we simply do not offer appointments during your preferred time, you can also email us with any questions you have.
Q: I’ve made an appointment but where do I go?
A: The advising office is in Rm 442 on the 4th floor of Dunn Hall. When exiting the elevator or main stair well, take a left and follow the hallway around the corner.
Q: I emailed my CMJ advisor. When will I get a response?
A: First, make sure you email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. You will get the fastest response from this account. We check this account Monday-Thursday and typically reply in less than 24 hours. During busy enrollment time, we may take a bit longer.
Please be patient–we try to respond as quickly as possible. If you email on Friday through the weekend, we may not respond before the following Monday.
Q: How do I know what classes I have left to take for my major?
A: You can find your degree progress in the student self service center on MaineStreet. This report will tell you what requirements you have completed and what remains. This report will not show if an exception has been made for any of your requirements.
You can also check the Undergraduate Program page on the department website to see what CMJ classes count towards your major.
Q: I’ve seen Public Relations listed as a minor in course catalog. Why can’t I declare it as a minor?
A: You are looking at the wrong year of the course catalog.
The online catalogue sometimes defaults to an earlier year when you go to the Majors and Minors section. Double check the dates at the top of the page to make sure you are getting the correct information.
Q: I want to sign up for summer courses. Do I need a pin?
A: No, you should be able to sign up on your own.
If you have filed for May graduation but need to take a summer course, you can still walk in graduation as planned, but will need to file as an August graduate.
Q: I’ve finished all my requirements. Why can’t I graduate?
A: Graduation requires a minimum of 120 credit hours. This number of credits is required for all students, no matter what your major is. Fulfilling all of your requirements will not often get you to the required number of credits. It is recommended that you take at least 15 credits per semester in order to reach this number in four years.
