Lily Herakova (she/her) is an Associate Professor and Director of Communication Education. A native of Bulgaria, Dr. Herakova holds a PhD in Communication from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and has taught at various colleges and universities for over 15 years. Her research is in the areas and at the intersections of Health Communication, Pedagogy, Equity, and Social Change, and has been published nationally and internationally. Using ethnographic, performance, and narrative methods, Lily explores the role of communication in everyday processes of learning, knowledge construction and negotiation, and community-building. Most recently, she has focused on critical explorations of practices and impacts of mentorship in education, particularly in relation to faculty and students whose presence and thriving in U.S. academia is jeopardized by the continued legacies of colonisation. As a Director of Communication, Lily looks forward to bringing consideration of these topics to her work with CMJ instructors in developing and supporting inclusive, engaged, and critical teaching practices. Dr. Herakova works directly with CMJ Teaching Assistants to prepare and mentor them in their roles as college educators.
