Pulitzer Week Event: “Why Journalism Matters: The Garrett Brown Story”

March 28, 2016 @ 12:10 pm - 1:00 pm

Pulitzer Week Event: “Why Journalism Matters: The Garrett Brown Story”
Erin Rhoda, Editor, Maine Focus

Garrett Brown, a young man from central Maine, opened up his life to BDN editor Erin Rhoda, and the public, by allowing her to follow him for what turned out to be two-and-a-half years. Through some of the hardest times in his life — accidental overdoses on heroin, incarceration and loss — he shared his missteps and dreams. Finally, in November 2015, he overdosed and died. The story, which shows a criminal justice system at odds with what works to treat addiction, sparked an outpouring of grief across the state. Erin will speak about why this kind of journalism is so difficult, yet so important, to do, and share insight about how to pull together reporting projects of impact.
