Communication/Journalism Internship

The Advanced Structures and Composites Center is a world-leading, interdisciplinary center for research, education, and economic development encompassing material sciences, manufacturing, and engineering of composites and structures.  Work at the Composites Center involves some of the most innovative and publicly known research being conducted on campus. These projects include the VolturnUS floating wind turbine, Composite Bridge Arches, and NASA’s HIAD.  There are immediate openings for both undergraduate and graduate student positions. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Interviewing student researchers
  • Aiding in photography and video production
  • Maintaining and managing media content
  • Ensuring updated and accurate website links and information
  • Helping develop print and web communication materials, including media releases
  • Assisting with ongoing special projects and events

Office of the Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School Communications Internship
The OVPRDGS maintains the Research website, a monthly newsletter, social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Google +), and coordinates communications between 16 centers and institutes on campus with a variety of media.
Help create, plan and implement various media for the OVPRDGS. This includes:
  • writing stories,
  • preparing press releases,
  • developing social media content and strategy,
  • graphic design,
  • photography
  • and creating other marketing and communications materials.
Interns will gain experience using WordPress, Mailchimp, Canva, Infogram, Hootsuite, Google Analytics and Drive, Box, Zoom, and more.
Skills needed:
  • strong writing,
  • interviewing,
  • proofreading,
  • familiarity with social media administration
  • and basic HTML knowledge.

University of Maine System Micro-Credential Initiative Internship and Employment Opportunity

Remote, $12.50/hr

Be part of a tight-knit team, helping to promote and support the University of Maine System Micro-Credential Initiative.

Responsibilities may include:

Audit existing micro-credential content, documents, and other relevant materials to provide feedback and edits and earn your own digital badges and micro-credentials

  • Develop a UMS micro-credential e-newsletter (e.g., research, write Student Spotlight and stories)
  • Gather information related to micro-credential learning pathways for website and/or publications
  • Organize communication/marketing publications and web content
  • Office/Basic administrative assistance by maintaining documents, spreadsheets and reports on Google Drive
  • Assist in creating Public Relations/Marketing videos & training session materials; develop supporting documents.
  • Attend training
  • Attend Zoom meetings; regular check-ins and written weekly updates on project statuses; keep an accurate time card

Required

  • Currently enrolled UMS student
  • Earn your own digital badge(s) before being hired or shortly after; Share your badges on LinkedIn and other locations
  • Excellent written skills; Provide a sample of your writing
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong time management and organizational skills; ability to work independently and remotely.
  • Accurately share progress in a consistent manner;
  • Have access to an internet-enabled computer for the 10 hours a week that has a webcam and microphone;
  • Experience with graphic design programs (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite) with sample of work (e.g., newsletter)

Desired Skills:

Proven strengths in editing, familiarity with social media administration; public relations, marketing, presentation skills, teamwork, knowledge of WordPress; experience with Excel, Word, Google Drive, experience with e-newsletter development and programs.

Hours per week:

Average of 10 hours per week or less during the semester.  May also register for Internship credits through your department or campus Career Center.

Events Planning Internship | Center for Undergraduate Research (CUGR)

The CUGR Annual Academic Showcase is an event open to any undergraduate student at UMaine. The Showcase events feature presentations from students in the numerous different forms, including oral presentations, performances, and exhibits. The events are held in the Wells Conference Center and they are all-day events.  Interns will be expected to help with event logistics (name tags, room layout and set-up, program compilation, communication/marketing, etc.). There is also a need for behind the scenes assistance as well as interpersonal tasks.

Skill we are looking for but not limited to:

        • Propose new ideas to improve the event planning and implementation process.
        • Assist with managing on-site production and clean up for event as necessary.
        • Prepare nametags, materials, notebooks, packages, gift bags, registration lists, seating cards, etc.
        • Assist with closing out event as required.
        • Excellent communication skills, including writing, proof reading skills, and speaking.
        • Excellent interpersonal skills both in person and by phone, with high professionalism.
        • Ability to accomplish projects within given time frame
        • High expectations for quality.
        • Proficient using the latest versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint,  and mail merges; email and web searches.
